Just Enough Really Is Enough…

A month or so back, I visited my niece Julia in Seattle – she was staying in a short term apartment rental for 3 months while studying there.  I fell in love with the simplicity and functionality of her kitchen, and it reminded me that it perfectly exemplified how “just enough really is enough”.

She had 8 large plates, small plates, bowls, and mugs.  She had the standard necessary utensils, along with 3 pots and 2 pans, 2 glass baking dishes and 3 mixing/storage bowls.  And with the dishwasher, she would run it (economy cycle!) when she was getting low. And she entertained friends for dinner and breakfast….all with what she had.  It was just enough.

Have you recently looked deep into the recesses of your kitchen cabinets to discover unnecessary bulky items taking up space? When was the last time you used that waffle griddle?  Or the ice cream machine?  Be real with yourself.

Having too much is exhausting. There’s constant re-arranging and stacking and nesting….ugh, what a waste of time and energy. Not to mention, all that stuff we don’t use robs us of space we need for the things we do use.

How about a CHALLENGE?  Are you up for it?

  • Take a couple of plastic bins, or boxes, and clear out everything except the bare necessities.
  • Model your kitchen after the pictures of Julia’s kitchen here.
  • Then put those filled bins/boxes away, maybe in your attic or cellar, for 2 months.
  • See how living without them….and living with just enough…..really feels.

You might discover you do miss one or two things, and that’s ok.  It’s all part of the discovery process.

You likely will discover how easy and simple life becomes when you have just enough.

Let me know how this challenge goes for you, I’d love, love to hear your thoughts!!
