10 little simplifying & organizing projects you can do during quarantine

During this unprecedented time with the covid virus, work & home lives crashing together and so much uncertainty ahead …. one thing I’ve heard from everyone (and I mean everyone) is “This Is Harder Than I Expected”. Like, way harder, on so many levels.

With that in mind, and so much out of our control, I thought it might be helpful to share 10 small organizing projects you can do and regain a feeling of control and accomplishment!

And I mean “little”. Nobody seems to have the appetite to hijack the entire weekend plowing through the over-loaded garage, or banishing yourself into the bowels of the dusty attic, so these are bite-sized projects.

#1 Ahhhh, consider refreshing & reorganizing your Pantry. Start taking just a little at a time, maybe work first on getting all your dry goods into air tight clear jars w/labels! Once that’s done, tackle the next category of stuff. Before you know it – reclaimed gorgeous & super functional pantry!

#2 Paperwork and files have a way of filling up file drawers so quickly, crammed full of obsolete stuff, and the current important stuff piles up on the desk surface.
Take a drawer or section at a time and ask yourself “could I get this info somewhere else ‘if’ I ever need it?” If no, and it really matters/is important, keep it. If yes, time to recycle or shred!

#3 How about reclaiming your overstuffed Linen Closet? Tip: limit the number of bed sheets for each bed to 2 – makes life SO much easier – when 1 set is on the bed the 2nd set is in the wash.
For towels – You deserve to use the good ones, donate or toss the old, stained, tattered, mismatched ones.
Before you know it your linen closet is rescued – with just enough of what you use & need.

#4 When did you last organize your Spices? Start by taking every single one out, group like items together (baking, salts..) and now toss out all the expired ones!
Another tip is to combine together any that are only 1/2 full – saves you space when you put them back.
Last, be absolutely ruthless deciding to keep only those you truly love & use. The rest must go.
Now you’re really cookin!!

#5 Weed out the stacks of old Pots & Pans! If they’re stained, chipped and well used (awesome!!) and now it’s time to toss.
Happily donate the mismatched/ just no longer using/have replaced with new ones so someone in need can use them.
In no time at all you’ve got a simplified & organized cabinet – with just enough pots & pans that you use & need.

#6 Simplify and organize your Dishes & Glassware! Donate all the mismatched ones you don’t use – someone out there can use them now. Keep only what you love and use.
Also use your vertical space, stack like with like, try using a shelf extender rack so stacking is safe.
Enjoy your reclaimed cabinet with just enough of the dishes and glassware that you use & need.

#8 Clearing off your Kitchen Counter Tops is a real game-changer! Store away things you don’t use often – like the blender, cutting boards, over-flowing canister of kitchen tools. Next, make the mindset shift to value clear, uncluttered work space over having everything out and visible.
You’ll love your beautiful, spacious counter tops – with just enough of what you use & need.

#9 Tidy up & organize your Laundry Area! Consolidate together those 1/2 bottles of detergent and softener – this means less to have to store. Then clear off machine surfaces/ tops by creating some storage space. Maybe install some floating shelves or re-purpose an old cube storage unit or bookcase that’s not being used.
You may not mind doing laundry as much in a functional, tidy area!

#10 Create a functional and inviting Entry Way! Pare down all the coats, boots, gloves..etc to pack up for next year. Be ruthless! Then thin out all the other stuff that tends to collect (phone chargers, sunglasses, bags..) and put them where they belong. Make use of untapped space on the inside of closet doors or on walls by using hooks. Take advantage of using space under a bench for storage. Welcome home!.

Give some of these 10 little projects a try and see how you feel after you’re done! Simplify. Organize. Thrive.
